In 1877 a bronze statue of "The Puritan" sculpted by Augustus St Gaudens was presented to the city of Springfield and placed beside the public library on State St. It is now in Springfield's Merrick Park. It was dedicated to the memory of Deacon Samuel Chapin of whom it is said it is an idealised portrait. It emphasises the piety and perhaps moral rigidity of the country's religious founders, evident in the scultoral pose with the proud stance, the sure stride, flowing cape, assertive use of cane and hefty Bible.
