[edit] KingdomHe was king of Morgannwg and the ruler whose name is given to the Kingdoms and later counties of Glamorgan, which at his time embraced the Kingdom of Gwent and Glywysing and through probable ties with Ergyng into lands east of the River Wye. Westwards his kingdom extended west of the River Towy.
[edit] SuccessionHe in turn was succeeded by his son Ithel ap Morgan.

Note
Athrwys (sometimes misspelled as Arthwys) was a Prince, possibly a King, from Gwent in Wales, who is generally accepted as having lived in the early 7th century.
Athrwys (spelled Andres or Andrus [for Archaic Welsh *Antres] in the early medieval Latin Life of Saint Cadoc[1]) was the son of Meurig ap Tewdrig, a King of Gwent (and probably Glywysing, now known as Glamorgan) by his wife, Onbrawst, or Onbraus the daughter of Gwrgan Fawr, King of Ergyng (Western Herefordshire).
His family relationships are recorded in a number of Old Welsh pedigrees, as well the Book of Llandaff. From her study of the Llandaff Charters in this manuscript, Prof. Wendy Davies has concluded that Athrwys predeceased his father around 655 and never actually ruled in Gwent.
His son was Morgan ab Athrwys or Morgan Mwynfawr 'Morgan the Benefactor' in the Welsh language. Morgan was King of Morgannwg, or Gwent and Glywysing, land as far west as the River Towy and also encompassing land beyond the River Wye, into the old Kingdom of Ergyng, South Herefordshire.
He was in turn succeeded by his son Ithel.
Athrwys ap Meurig
Due to the similarity of their names, it has been suggested that Arthwys had some connection with King Arthur, or was even the historical basis for the legendary king. However, the identification has been challenged on linguistic grounds by most of those who have examined the names.[2]

Note
Meurig ap Tewdrig (Latin: Mauritius) was the son of Tewdrig (St. Tewdrig), and a king of the early Welsh kingdoms of Gwent and Glywysing. He is thought to have lived sometime between 400 and 600 AD.
Meurig took over the Gwent throne upon his father's abdication. According to tradition, Tewdrig became a hermit at Tintern, but later came to the assistance of Meurig, and they repelled the invading Saxons in a battle at Pont y Saeson (Bridge of the Saxons). Tewdrig died after the battle, and Meurig buried him at Mathern, giving the surrounding land (including the area of the later village of Pwllmeurig, named after Meurig), in his memory to the bishops of Llandaff.
Meurig reunited his kingdom with Ergyng (Archenfield) by marrying Onbrawst, the daughter of King Gwrgan Fawr (the Great) of that kingdom. He was later claimed to have been a great patron of the ecclesiastical centre at Llandaff, where he was said to be buried.
He was the father of Athrwys ap Meurig, one of a number of figures that researchers have claimed as the "real King Arthur". Athrwys is believed to have pre-deceased Meurig, who was succeeded by his grandsons, Ithel and Morgan Mwynfawr.

Note
Cynfarch Oer (also known as Cunomarcus or Cynfarch ap Meirchion) was probably a 6th century king of the Sub-Roman realm of Rheged, believed to be located in north-west England and south-west Scotland.
Next to nothing is known about Cynfarch. He appears in the Old Welsh pedigrees of the Brythonic 'Men of the North' as the son of the equally obscure Meirchion Gul (Marcianus the Lean) and father of the slightly better documented Urien Rheged. His name was well remembered however and his family were known as the 'Cynferchyn' in his honour. His unflattering epithet Oer probably means '(the) Unwelcoming' (literally 'cold').
It is assumed that Cynfarch ruled in Rheged before Urien. Hence the apparent 'Rheged' placename at Dunragit near Stranraer and tales of March ap Meirchion (or Cun-march ap Meirchion) in the same area. He may also have been a participant in the Battle of Arfderydd in 573.
